Double Chin/Jowls

Double Chin – Saggy Jowls

Skin naturally loses elasticity with age. As the cheeks become thinner and flatter, skin that was once plumped out by fat can appear to sag at the jawline and also under the chin. This all contributes to the look of jowliness. Fat may also accumulate at and under the chin, creating a double chin.

Almost everyone develops jowls as they age. As we age, pockets of fat move downwards from the cheek area to the lower face. At the same time, you are also likely to lose fat and bone in certain areas at the jawline, such as either side of the chin.

Over time, the skin in your cheeks and below your jawline loses much of its collagen and elastin. Collagen is a protein that makes up the connective tissue in your body. Elastin is another connective tissue protein that lets your skin return to its normal shape even after being stretched.

As these proteins are lost, the cheek skin surrounding your mouth loses its firmness and tightness. Once this happens, gravity causes it to sag and descend to the area on either side of your mouth and chin.

There are now a number of non-surgical treatment options to improve the appearance of the chin and jowls, dermal fillers can contour and mask the jowl by defining the jawline. Also we are introducing an exciting new treatment of fat dissolving injections called Celluform. Celluform can target small stubborn areas of fat all over the body, but is particularly effective to remove fat from the  double chin for good!
